The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), launched in 1983, observed 20,000 galaxies, 130,000 stars and star clusters, and 90,000 other space objects while performing an all-sky survey during its mere ten months in space. Its most notable discovery was that of a new type of galaxy, a starburst galaxy. In starburst galaxies, new stars are forming more rapidly than in other types of galaxies.

HST (1990-2007?)
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST), launched in 1990 and still operational today, is a general purpose space observatory with wide ranging capabilities. Orbiting 600 kilometers (365 miles) above Earth, HST has a modular design that allows it to make observations in multiple wavelengths, including ultraviolet (UV). This unique design also allows HST to be serviced and upgraded in space. HST has provided us unprecedented views of the birth and death of stars. These views show that planet-forming dust surrounding young stars is common throughout galaxies. HST has peered deep into the Universe to reveal galaxies that were forming nine billion years ago. HST was the first optical telescope to provide convincing proof that black holes several billion times the mass of the Sun exist in active galactic nuclei.

WUPPE (1990, 1995)

The Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) was one of three UV instruments of the ASTRO-1 mission flown on the space shuttle Columbia during December 2-10, 1990. On hundred and six spectro-photometric observations of 77 targets were obtained in the Far UV (91-185 nm) at a resolution of ~3 angstroms. A few sources were observed in the 41.5 - 91.2 nm region with a 1.5 angstrom resolution. The same three instruments were later flown on the space shuttle Endeavour during March 3-17, 1995, as part of the ASTRO-2 mission. During the longer ASTRO-2 mission, 385 observations of 265 targets were obtained.

UIT (1990, 1995)
The Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) was one of three UV telescopes on the ASTRO-1 mission flown on the space shuttle Columbia from December 2-10, 1990. The same three instruments were later flown on the space shuttle Endeavour from March 3-17, 1995, as part of the ASTRO-2 mission. Images were obtained on 70 millimeter photographic film in the 120-330 nanometer range using broadband filters and later digitized using a Perkin-Elmer microdensitometer. Image resolution was 3 arcseconds over a 40 arcminute field of view. Overall, UIT-1 obtained 821 exposures of 66 targets, and UIT-2 obtained 758 images of 193 targets.

ORFEUS (1992, 1996)

EUVE (1992-)
The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), launched in 1992, was the first satellite to make both spectroscopic and wide-band observations in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) region, from 7-80 nanometers. This mission was a major step forward in understanding the physics of astronomical objects seen in this newly opened window of the electromagnetic spectrum. In January of 2001 this satellite conducted the first EUV survey of the sky and collected data from over 350 unique astronomical targets. This survey reaped several stunning results, only some of which are listed here:

* observed EUV dayglow from the atmosphere of Venus
* discovered emission from helium in the atmosphere of Jupiter during the impact of the comet Shoemaker/Levy 9
* determined that the "local bubble" of hot interstellar gas surrounding our solar system is shaped more like a "chimney" with open ends pointing into the halo of the Milky Way
* observed heating of the corona of stars by flares

SOHO (1995-)

ISO (1995-1998)
NUVIEWS (1996-)

The Narrow-band Ultraviolet Imaging Experiment for Wide Field Surveys (NUVIEWS) is a sounding rocket experiment designed to study the interstellar medium of the Milky Way. The experiment consists of four telescopes with wide field of views (20 degrees across) and detectors designed to measure UV light in narrow wavelength bands similar to the Far UV detectors on GALEX. NUVIEWS was first launched in July 1996 and so far has mapped nearly half the sky detecting UV emission from molecular hydrogen and the scattering of UV light by dust in the interstellar medium between the stars in the Milky Way.

WIRE - Wide-Field InfraRed Explorer

FUSE (1999-)
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), launched in 1999, is continuing to make observations in the UV. The FUSE observations are approximately 90-120 nanometers, while GALEX will observe between 130 and 300 nanometers. FUSE has much greater sensitivity and resolving power than previous instruments used to study light in this wavelength range. Its main objectives are to study the abundance of elements in the interstellar medium near the Sun, in gas clouds in the far reaches of our Milky Way galaxy, and in distant intergalactic clouds between galaxies. FUSE has discovered that the Milky Way galaxy is surrounded by a corona of hot gas, and is measuring the abundance of isotopes like deuterium (heavy hydrogen) and elements like helium in the regions between galaxies. It has detected molecular hydrogen in the atmosphere of Mars, which may indicate the presence of water. FUSE has also measured the speed of material ejected during the explosion of an old star.
